Ask Mike:
|
| Hey MIKE, something is eating my viburnum shrubs. Here is the weird part, some of the bushes are stripped bare the others viburnums right next to them are fine. Can you tell me what the problem is and do you think they are dead? Dave from Russell Thank for the email Dave, well good news is that your shrubs will most likely re-leaf, and although they may not look quite normal this year, they will live. The bad news is that if this happens several years in a row, they are more likely to die. The cause of all this trouble is the appearance of the Viburnum Leaf Beetle in our area. This pest was identified in the Cleveland area last year and has begun to cause noticeable damage this year. The beetle lays eggs on the twigs of the shrub, and in the spring, the eggs hatch. The larva can strip an entire shrub of its leaves overnight. The Viburnum Leaf Beetle is attacking only Viburnum dentatum (Arrowwood Viburnum). This year the shrub will need to be fed and treated to control the pest. In the following years, Viburnum will need to be on control program for Viburnum Leaf Beetle. Give us a call if you have additional questions, we'll happily take the time to go over all of your tree and shrub care concerns. |
